The Future of Pistol Competition at Eustis Gun Club

Fast. Challenging. Dynamic. And a whole lot of fun.

EGC Action Pistol Shooting Sports represents an exciting and growing part of the future of organized shooting at Eustis Gun Club.

Action Pistol takes traditional marksmanship off the static firing line and adds movement, changing shooting positions, multiple targets, steel, obstacles, reloads, time pressure, and stage strategy. Every course of fire presents a new challenge—and no two matches have to feel exactly the same.

As interest in dynamic pistol competition continues to grow, Eustis Gun Club is committed to developing an Action Pistol program capable of growing right along with our members.

Today, EGC Action Pistol features two exciting competitive formats:

IDPA — International Defensive Pistol Association

Practical Equipment. Defensive Concepts. Dynamic Competition.

The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is an internationally recognized action shooting sport built around defensive pistol concepts and practical firearms and equipment.

Rather than simply standing in one position and firing at a single target, IDPA competitors navigate courses of fire incorporating different shooting positions, movement, use of cover, target-engagement requirements, reloads, and other challenges.

Stages may be designed around defensive scenarios or standardized shooting exercises that test specific firearm-handling and marksmanship skills.

The result is a sport that combines accuracy, speed, firearm handling, decision-making, and stage execution.

What Makes IDPA Different?

IDPA places an emphasis on equipment suitable for practical defensive use rather than specialized competition-only “race” equipment.

Competition is divided into firearm divisions so shooters compete within appropriate equipment categories. Current divisions accommodate a broad range of commonly used firearms, including traditional semi-automatic pistols, compact pistols, revolvers, optic-equipped handguns, and Pistol Caliber Carbines.

Different stages can challenge competitors to shoot:

While moving
From different positions
Around or behind cover
With strong or support hand
Through changing target presentations
Under the pressure of the clock

Accuracy matters.

Speed matters.

And figuring out how to put everything together is where the challenge—and the fun—begins.

EGC members who want to explore IDPA are encouraged to come out, observe a match, meet our Action Pistol competitors and Match Directors, and learn about the equipment, safety requirements, match procedures, and skills necessary to participate.

Because official rules, equipment specifications, divisions, and competition requirements can change, participants should always consult the International Defensive Pistol Association for current rules and requirements.

GPA — Galactic Pistol Alliance

Half the Rules. Twice the Fun.

Looking for another approach to Action Pistol?

Welcome to Galactic Pistol Alliance (GPA).

GPA is a newer competitive action shooting format designed around several straightforward principles:

Be safe. Be challenging. Be fun. Be interesting. Keep it understandable.

The sport has been evolving since 2022 and offers competitors a fast-moving Action Pistol experience with simplified rules and plenty of opportunities to shoot.

GPA stages can require as many as 24 shots, incorporate movement, steel targets, non-threat targets, reload decisions, and a variety of shooting challenges.

Competitors are responsible for their own ammunition management, and stages require a mandatory reload after the first shot and before the final shot—but deciding when and where to make that reload is part of the shooter's strategy.

GPA also eliminates or simplifies several restrictions competitors may encounter in other shooting sports.

No concealment garment is required.

Targets in the open do not have tactical priority.

Dropping a magazine containing ammunition doesn't automatically mean a procedural penalty.

Competitors may be required to engage targets while moving.

And equipment already being used in another pistol sport may very well fit into an appropriate GPA division.

The result is exactly what GPA intends it to be:

Safe. Challenging. Easy to understand. And FUN.

Competition Makes Better Shooters

Whether you choose IDPA, GPA, or eventually another EGC Action Pistol format, the real value of the program is what happens as you continue participating.

  • You learn to shoot accurately under time pressure.
  • You learn to move safely with a firearm.
  • You learn to plan a stage.
  • You learn where you lose time.
  • You discover which fundamentals need work.

And then you come back and try again. Scores and rankings make it competition. Improvement is what keeps you coming back.

The community that develops around the sport is just as important. Experienced competitors help newer shooters understand stages, procedures, equipment, and competition. Members volunteer to help build stages, reset targets, score, and keep matches moving.

One Club. One Membership. Many Shooting Sports.
